COCKPIT:
An Illustrated History of W W II Aircraft Interiors
COCKPIT...the act of strapping in helps to integrate pilot and machine, and, ideally, the pilot's hands fall naturally to the stick and throttle. They move and the machine responds, offering full three-dimensional freedom. They offer an escape from terrestrial bondage and a level of exhilaration that is hard to match." While there is no shortage of books on Second World War fighter aircraft, Cockpit is the first book to take us insideso many of the most revered and feared fighters and bombers of the War, including rare shots of Japanese and German aircraft interiors.
The Second World War represented a classic period in
the development and perfection of propeller-driven aircraft.
Built during the crisis of war, the cockpits and aircraft
featured in this book were marvels of technology and
ingenuity. A candid "pilot's perspective" accompanies
the story of each plane. Cockpit offers an unprecedented
inside look at these extraordinary airplanes and the
men who flew them.

Because of the pictures of Dan Patterson
it is now possible to walk in the footsteps of World War 2 pilots
and try to imagine what it was like to fly these airplanes. I hope
that the authors of these two magnificent books (Cockpit and Gunner)
can find the inspiration to bring out more books like this, because
these books are two of the finest in my collection.
